Entre Chien et Loup

Note: “entre chien et loup” is a French expression meaning, “between dog and wolf.” It is used to describe twilight. It comes from being able to see an animal up ahead but not being able to distinguish if it’s a dog or a wolf, because it‘s half day/half night. (Loup is pronounced loo.)

Sometimes I live so confidently
Certain of what lies ahead
Sometimes I know just what to do
But often I find myself
Entre chien et loup

Sometimes I think I know you well
Certain of who you are
Sometimes I know just what you’re about
But usually I understand you
Entre chien et loup

Sometimes I think I trust you
Certain you’ve got it under control
Sometimes I turn it over easily
But mostly I surrender
Entre chien et loup

Sometimes I think I’m healed and whole
Certain of my growth
Sometimes I think the old is gone - the new has come
But frustratingly I mature
Entre chien et loup

Sometimes I hear you clearly
Certain of what you say
Sometimes we commune like lovers
But typically I experience you
Entre chien et loup

When will your kingdom come?
When will your will be done
By me, as it is in heaven

When will I see you face to face
Having run a good race

And finally be like you?

Lord, I don’t know what more to do
But ask for grace
And adjust my pace
As I stumble forward

Entre chien et loup
