VICES listed in the New Testament

Part of the 12 step process is taking a daily personal inventory. This is a chance to review our behavior, identifying the wrongs and the rights.

There are several places in the New Testament that have lists of behaviors - both postitive and negative. I thought that these lists might be helpful in evaluating my behavior.

• 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
• Romans 13:13-14
• James 3:17-18
• Revelation 21:8
• 2 Corinthians 12:20-21
• Ephesians 5:1-7; 15-21

The problem is that there are a lot of lists, and lots of things mentioned in each list! Not too practical for a daily review. So I decided to study each of the passages and look up the definition of each behavior listed, and then compile them into similar categories.

Following is a summary of the "negative" behaviors mentioned. I will do another article later about the positive behaviors mentioned.

USED CAR SALESMAN

Meanings: Extort, swindle, embezzle, lie, deceive, take advantage of
Greek: Harpax, Kleptes, Pseudes

PARTY ON, DUDE

Meanings: Unbridled lust, riotous life, wild partying, intoxication
Greek: Aselgeia, Asotia, Komos, Methe

BLUE COLLAR COMEDY

Meanings: Coarse jesting, low humor, foolish talking
Greek: Eutrapelia, Morologia

ILLICIT CONTACT
Meanings: Sex outside the boundaries of marriage
Greek: Porneia, Koite

THE COWARDLY LION

Meaning: timid, fearful, cowardly
Greek: Deilow

AMERICAN IDOLATER

Meaning: The worshipping of false gods, and the vices that spring from that
Greek: Eidololatreia

SIMON COWELL

Meaning: a puffing up of soul, loftiness, pride
Greek: Phusiosis

GAY PRIDE

Meanings: Homosexual activity, lifestyle, and prostitution
Greek: Arsenokoites, Malakos, Pornos

SMEAR CAMPAIGN

Meanings: Defaming others, slander and gossip, verbal abuse
Greek: Katalalia, Psithurismos, Loidoros

THE GREEN-EYED MONSTER

Meanings: Envy, Jealousy, Covetousness, Greed

BENEDICT ARNOLD

Meanings: Disloyal, unfaithful, faithless

RABBLE-ROUSER

Meanings: Disorder, confusion, quarreling, strife, dissensions, division, murder, factions
